Rev. Van Rathbun, Transitional Pastor

Pastor Van has been hired as a Transitional Pastor here at Hull First Reformed during the church’s vacancy.  He has served churches in Oklahoma City, OK, Kalamazoo, MI, Cedar Grove, WI and recently in Sioux Center, IA.  Together,he and his wife Terry have raised seven children:  Julia, Andrew, Sarah, Thomas, Emma, Joshua, and Gabe.  They enjoy a lot of family activities (traveling, bicycle rides, walks, and gardening) and through the years have attended countless sporting events.  As part of his calling and ministry, Pastor Van has been privileged to serve on the boards of Northwestern College, Bethany Christian Services (Orange City) and Words of Hope.  Currently, he serves as clerk of the West Sioux Classis.  You can email Pastor Van at

Bethany Dykstra, Director of Youth & Christian Education

In her role, Bethany helps plan education programs, provides resource materials, trains and supports teachers and leaders in the education department.  She also loves organizing the youth ministry programs for Jr. High (IMPACT) and Sr. High (ROCK).  She was thankful to step into this role in Fall 2018, after growing up in Orange City and graduating from Northwestern College there.  On the side, she enjoys distance running, meeting people from other cultures, and playing the violin and piano.  She lives in Hull.  You can email Bethany at

Gayle Van Leeuwen, Secretary

As Church Secretary, Gayle handles many administrative responsibilities at the church. She assembles the monthly newsletter Highlights, puts together the weekly bulletin and delivers mail to members’ mailboxes, along with various other duties. Gayle began working as secretary in 2008. Jeanne Visser, Mission and Outreach Coordinator

As Missions and Outreach Coordinator my job is to equip faithful disciples to reach out in love by assisting, preparing and encouraging congregational members of all ages for active service to others, fulfilling the Great Commission.  Some of my responsibilities include coordinating service projects, donations, mission trips fundraisers and communication with missionaries.  My husband, Jay, and I live in Hull.  We have three sons and one grandchild.  We enjoy golfing, Iowa State events, reading and traveling.


Jim Bynes, Ministry of Visitation

Serving as Ministry of Visitation, Jim visits the shut-ins of the church.  This involves visiting those who are residents of nursing homes and assisted living centers.  He also calls on those who are still living in their homes.  Jim grew up in Orange City and married Barb Van Peursem in June, 1974.   In November 1977, Jim and Barb bought the grocery store in Hull, Handy Grocery, which is Dan’s Food Center today.  After owing the store for 12 years, Jim went to work for Hy-Vee in Sioux Center and later at Van’s in Rock Valley.  In 1993, Jim began working for Jesco, later called Echo, as a sales rep for 23 years.  Today Jim drives for Rides 2-3 days a week and also serves First Reformed Church as Ministry of Visitation.

Glenda Bonestroo, Church Treasurer

Glenda lives in Hull with her husband, Arlan.  Glenda became  the church treasurer after retiring from the Boyden-Hull school system after 31 years of teaching high school math. As treasurer, her responsibilities include:

  1. Keep record of accounts
  2. Issue and Distribute Checks
  3. Payroll
  4. Prepare Financial Reports
